Key Background:
Saudi Arabia’s ports authority, Mawani, has launched its 30th new shipping service of the year, introducing a direct route between Jeddah Islamic Port and Port Sudan. The new service, named the “JSS” service, is operated by Marsa Ocean Shipping and offers a capacity of 1,118 containers. It is expected to strengthen trade flows across the Red Sea and support the Kingdom’s export activities.
Mawani says this initiative aims to boost Jeddah’s port efficiency, improve global rankings, and strengthen Saudi Arabia’s trade connections with Asia, Africa, and Europe. The move also contributes to the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 goals, which aim to increase the logistics sector’s share of GDP from 6 percent to 10 percent by 2030.
Mawani shared that the new JSS shipping route, run by Marsa Ocean Shipping, has started at Jeddah Islamic Port, becoming the 30th service launched this year to boost the port’s efficiency and competitiveness.
This latest launch follows a series of recent expansions in the Kingdom’s shipping network. In August, Goodrich introduced the RSX1 service, linking Jeddah to Port Sudan, Djibouti, and Jebel Ali in the UAE with a 720 TEU capacity. Blue Ocean Shipping also launched the BOS service to Qingdao, Ningbo, and Nansha in China, with a 2,300 TEU capacity.
Earlier, CMA CGM began the LRX service, connecting Jeddah to Latakia in Syria, as well as Iskenderun and Mersin in Turkiye, and Beirut in Lebanon, marking Saudi Arabia’s first direct shipping link with Syria. Other services include Wan Hai Lines’ AR2 Asia Redsea service and the IM2 service by Emirates Line and Wan Hai, connecting key ports across China, Turkiye, Egypt, India, and the Middle East.
In March, Mawani also launched the “Chinook Clanga” service, operated by Mediterranean Shipping Co., linking Saudi Arabia’s eastern ports of Dammam and Jubail to 16 international destinations, including Bahrain, Qatar, India, Sri Lanka, and Singapore.
These developments help Saudi Arabia strengthen its role as a regional trade hub and improve its ports to support growing international trade.
