Background

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held talks with Thai Industry Minister Varawut Silpa-archa to expand trade, investment, and joint manufacturing, as he began the first visit by an Egyptian foreign minister to Thailand in 30 years.

The two sides focused on industrial cooperation across rubber, petrochemicals, and tires, sectors where Thailand holds a clear edge, the Egyptian foreign ministry said. He praised Thailand’s progress in innovation, digital transformation, and sustainability, and said Egypt wants Thai expertise to localize manufacturing, lift domestic output, and grow industrial exports.

Abdelatty urged both countries to exchange economic and trade delegations, link their business communities, and widen market access. He highlighted the Suez Canal Economic Zone as an attractive investment destination, citing its industrial infrastructure, port access, logistics network, strategic position, and trade agreements with multiple countries. He called Thailand’s HI TECH the zone’s first Thai industrial project and urged more investment.

Silpa-archa welcomed the friendly ties and backed wider industrial, trade, and investment cooperation. He described Egypt as a gateway to African, Arab, and European markets and said Thailand wants to explore new production and investment opportunities in the SCZone.

The visit includes the third meeting of the Joint Ministerial Committee. The SCZone signed 117 projects worth $7.3 billion in the last fiscal year and plans a tire manufacturing complex under a $190 million deal with China’s Chaoyang Langma Tire. Egypt and Thailand have built ties since 1954, backed by a joint trade committee and an economic cooperation plan.
