  • Businesses can move rand-denominated value at any hour on blockchain infrastructure once the integration goes live.

Background-

Lipaworld, a stablecoin-powered financial platform for individuals and businesses in emerging markets, plans to add ZARU, a South African rand stablecoin, giving business customers direct access to the local currency.

The planned integration will let Lipaworld Business customers use the rand alongside global stablecoins such as USD Coin and Euro Coin. ZARU will be the platform’s first South African rand stablecoin.

Through Lipaworld Business, companies will hold and transfer ZARU and move between ZARU and supported global stablecoins. Once the integration goes live, they will also pay suppliers, run payroll in rand, and move rand-denominated value at any hour on blockchain infrastructure.

A stablecoin is a digital asset built to keep a steady value against a reference asset such as a currency. Most stablecoins track the US dollar, while ZARU tracks the South African rand.

Dollar stablecoins already settle cross-border payments faster than many traditional methods. A rand stablecoin adds a new option, since businesses that earn and spend in rand can now hold and move value in the currency they already use. Local currency and dollar stablecoins work side by side and connect domestic and global financial systems.

Lipaworld co-founder and CEO Jonathan Katende said stablecoins are changing how money moves worldwide and that local currencies belong in that future. He said working with ZARU links the rand to Lipaworld’s global payments infrastructure and builds more practical uses for digital rand payments.
Lipaworld and ZARU will share launch details.
