Applus+ lands Angola offshore contract for 3D modelling and digital twin delivery

Prime Highlights

  • Applus+ wins Angola offshore contract for laser scanning and 3D modelling after two years of prior delivery.
  • Digital twins from the project will cut repeated offshore visits and support future asset digitalisation.

Key Facts

  • Applus+ is an engineering and testing services firm specialising in offshore data capture and asset digitalisation.
  • Delivery spans Angola, Europe, and Asia, covering operations, quality assurance, and digital twin development.

Background

Applus+ has picked up a new contract in Angola, where a major oil and gas operator has brought the engineering and testing company on board to handle 3D modelling and laser scanning across its offshore operations.

The operator had already worked with Applus+ for two years before handing over this contract, a sign that the company’s track record in offshore data capture and digital modelling held weight in the decision.

The work involves sending teams offshore to collect detailed data using laser scanners, photogrammetry equipment, and drones. That raw data then gets processed into E3D models and digital twins, detailed virtual replicas of offshore platforms and FPSO vessels that engineers can navigate and interrogate without setting foot offshore again.

Those virtual models carry real operational value. Engineering teams can run design reviews, plan inspections, check for clashes between systems, and map out future modifications, all from the digital replica rather than organising another offshore campaign.

Delivery runs across three locations. The Angola team handles on-the-ground operations and local compliance. Supporting teams in Europe and Asia take care of project governance, quality checks, point-cloud data processing, and the actual construction of the digital twins.

The operator expects the finished twins to sharpen planning, cut the number of offshore visits staff need to make, and lay the groundwork for rolling out similar digital tools across other assets in its portfolio.
