Key Background
Dubai has introduced a new barrierless parking system at some of its most popular malls—Mall of the Emirates and City Centre Deira—using ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) technology. This smart parking initiative eliminates physical barriers, enabling smoother vehicle entry and exit while automatically tracking time spent in the parking area.
Mall visitors get complimentary parking for a limited amount of time: 4 hours at Mall of the Emirates on weekdays, and 3 hours at City Centre Deira on weekdays and Saturdays. Once free time has expired, charges begin at AED 20 and rise depending on the duration of stay. Overnight parking might cost AED 200 at City Centre Deira and AED 350 at Mall of the Emirates.
When a vehicle leaves, the system will send an SMS to the registered number with the charging applicable. If applicable, payment can be done using the Parkin app, website, kiosks on-site, or through a credit card or debit card, Apple Pay, or the Parkin wallet. Of course, users can also enroll for AutoPay for easy auto-debited payments and avoid late fees.
If payment is not made within three days, users will receive a reminder on day two and a follow-up call on day three. Failure to pay by the third day results in an AED 150 fine. Misusing designated disabled parking spaces without proper permits will incur a hefty AED 1,000 fine.
To optimize free time, consumers who spend AED 150 and above can enjoy free parking for an entire day. Mall of the Emirates adds visits to VOX Cinemas or Ski Dubai as additional free time of two hours on top of the four-hour limit.
This system is part of Dubai’s broader push toward smart mobility and efficient urban infrastructure. With over 20 million cars passing through these malls each year, the new technology ensures faster movement, reduces congestion, and enhances customer convenience without increasing costs.
