Background

German Accelerator has expanded its Africa activities by launching its first West Africa cohort, designed to help German startups explore business opportunities and build partnerships across the region.

The programme, called Kickstart: Global Mindset Activation – West Africa, brought together 21 German startups in Berlin. Participants received market insights, mentorship and guidance on international expansion, with a focus on opportunities in Ghana and Nigeria.

The initiative is part of German Accelerator’s wider effort to strengthen links between German and African innovation ecosystems. Earlier this year, the organisation launched its Africa engagement through a networking event in Berlin aimed at promoting economic cooperation between Germany and African countries.

Before the West Africa programme, eight German clean technology and energy startups joined the South Africa Market Discovery programme. The initiative helped companies understand the local business environment, meet potential partners and explore opportunities in the South African market.

During the latest programme, startups worked with industry experts and mentors to gain a better understanding of market conditions in West Africa. They also discussed partnership opportunities and strategies for entering African markets.

The programme ended with a networking event attended by startups, business partners and members of the German-African business community. Stefan Drews from Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy opened the event.

German Accelerator said Africa offers growing opportunities for cooperation in technology, clean energy and entrepreneurship. The organisation will continue its regional engagement by taking part in the German-African Business Summit (GABS 2026) in late November in Accra, Ghana, where business leaders and policymakers will discuss trade, investment and innovation between Germany and Africa.
