Key Background :

Emirates has strengthened its strategic coverage in East Asia further with the introduction of two new destinations—Da Nang in Vietnam and Siem Reap in Cambodia. With the two, Emirates is now linked to 23 destinations in East Asia, further strengthening the regional coverage of the airline. The new destinations are expected to promote both leisure and business travel in line with increasing bilateral relations and tourist traffic.

Emirates launched its inaugural flight to Da Nang on June 2, the third point of entry of the airline into Vietnam. It has 25 weekly services into Vietnam. It provides further complementarity to the UAE–Vietnam Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement by improving the flows of prominent export materials like electronics, textile, and perishable goods. Emirates is also further building cooperation with prominent Vietnamese partners through newly signed agreements with Vietnam Airlines, VietJet, and Sun Group.

Emirates launched Siem Reap, Cambodia, flights from Bangkok on June 3. Three flights a week add to the current Phnom Penh service from Singapore, increasing the overall weekly flights to Cambodia to 10. The new route aims at the expanding European holiday market for Southeast Asian cultural tourism experience. The Bangkok connection also aids Emirates’ plans to make Thailand a regional hub.

The inaugural ceremonies in Bangkok Airport, accompanied by the cutting of a cake at Emirates’ recently refurbished lounge, highlighted the central position of the Thai capital city within Emirates’ eastern expansion strategy in East Asia. The new routes come in the wake of the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Air China, once again cementing Emirates’ regional alliance. The MoU opens the way for intensified interline agreements, more so trunk routes between China and the UAE.

These new additions illustrate Emirates’ vision of many years to link Middle Eastern economies with vibrant East Asian economies, spurring tourism, trade, and strategic alliances throughout the region.
